Beach volleyball returns to the Rothenbaum!
After a truly magical first tournament as part of the Swatch Major Series, the Hamburg Major returns to the Rothenbaum Stadium at the heart of the northern German metropolis.
Between 8-13 August, the world’s best beach volleyball players will reunite inside the iconic stadium in what will be their first opportunity to get revenge in the first tournament after tussles in the World Championships in Vienna.
The 2016 tournament was hailed a magnificent success as capacity crowds flocked to the Rothenbaum. Packed ranks of fans watched on as local heroes Laura Ludwig and Kira Walkenhorst secured the women’s title – an honor the pair still ranked highly even after their epic Olympic and Swatch World Tour Finals triumphs.
The noise generated inside the stadium sent shivers down the spines of every single player and in August the Rothenbaum will be rocking once more as 32 teams per gender battle it out for one of the three places on the podium.
Last season’s tournament was one to remember as Hamburg made its debut as a part of the Swatch Major Series in 10 days of top-class beach volleyball.
The story of the week in the Rothenbaum was undoubtedly Laura Ludwig and Kira Walkenhorst’s victory in a breathtaking final against Brazilian stars Agatha/Barbara. The Germans prevailed with a nail-biting win in a dramatic deciding set.

The men’s tournament was won by American heroes Phil Dalhausser and Nick Lucena, who stunned Dutch duo Alex Brouwer and Robert Meeuwsen in the final. And there was a shock in the bronze medal match, as Brazilian favorites Alison/Bruno were beaten by a superb display by Russians Krasilnikov/Semenov.

But the tournament will also be remembered for being the last opportunity for teams to qualify for the Olympic Games through ranking points, which added an exciting extra twist to what was already a gripping week on the sand.
Although beach volleyball is no stranger to Hamburg thanks to the hard work, dedication and enthusiasm of organizer Frank Mackerodt, last year’s beach volleyball extravaganza at the Rothenbaum was the first as a Swatch Major Series – as two beach-loving forces combined.
The famous Rothenbaum Stadium is steeped in tennis history having hosted hundreds of top-class tournaments, but between 8-13 August the clay court will be replaced by almost 2,000 tons of golden sand. The stadium’s iconic roof structure and 13,000-capacity help make the 2016 smart Major Hamburg one of the most memorable tournaments of last summer.
The smart Major Hamburg saw thousands of happy beach fans pass through the entrance to see the world’s best players perform their heroics in top class competition absolutely free of charge.
And the great news is that for 2017 entry remains absolutely free, giving fans an incredible opportunity to watch the fast and furious action on the sand. Spectators will also be treated to a whole host of entertainment away from the Center Court at the Beach Village.
